I’ve found that when people ask, “Do you have a second?” they often times would like more of my time than just a second.
I wish they’d just call it what it really is.
“Do you have an extra 20-40 minutes to listen to me shoot the breeze while I stand in your office doorway and talk to the side of your head as you continue to type in an attempt to indicate to me through non-verbal communication that you really don’t have time to chat with me about the state of the economy?”
I’m still working.
Not looking at the person.
Not making eye contact.
Not even offering reassuring vocal cues to indicate that I’m listening.
Is the person deterred?
Absolutely not. The talking continues.
