Memorial Day is when we Americans come together to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice; they have served our country and given their lives.
They have left behind grand legacies and empty hearts.
Their loss is far greater than a statistic.
Each service person who has given his or her life had a distinctive laugh, a certain walk, a motto or credo that they clung to. Each was loved by someone and in turn, loved someone else.
They were Mommies.
They were Daddies.
They were brothers and sisters and uncles and aunts and cousins and friends.
They were someone’s child.
I couldn’t be more proud to be the sister of two men who have served our country selflessly.
I couldn’t be more proud to be the cousin and friend and daughter of still others who have given so that I might have the freedoms I have.
On this day we remember.
We thank you.
P.S. That’s my brother up there. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
