I like to record what my girls say out loud. I know I’m going to look back one day and miss their little quips.
Here are some recent exchanges of note: Vivienne 8, Lila 9.
Cue: Natalie Merchant’s, “…These are the days to remember… 🎵…”
::

Lila comes into the kitchen where Craig and I are standing and asks,
“Right that it’s fair that whoever loses at rock, paper, scissors has to go to Costco with Daddy?”
Craig tilts his head to the side…
“The loser has to go with me?”
No one builds your confidence like your kids.

Vivi and I were in the car:
Vivi: “Do you know how many boys and how many girls are on the planet?”
Me, driving: “No. Not off hand. But we can find that out, roughly.”
Vivi: “We should ask a wizard.”
Me, smiling, still driving: “Yeah, or we could google it.”
Vivi: “Yeah, it’s probably easier to search it up because we would have to travel all over to find a wizard.”
Me: “Yeah. You’re probably right.”
A wizard? Stop it.
Please don’t grow up.
(I also love that when she wants to learn more, or google something, she asks me, “Hey, can you **search up** good jokes for kids?”

And finally…

Lila shows me a secret code that she made.
She then made me a note in code. (Note, it’s the “BFF Code.”)

Here’s the inside of the code document:

I broke the code on MY note:
“I love you you sooo much Mommy.”

And then on the inside:
“The next note is in the fridge.”
(Why? Who knows.)
(Looks like she gave up on the code after “The”. (I believe bed time was approaching.)
“The next note is in the fridge.”

And, here are the two notes that were found in the fridge:

“You are probably the nicest mother or person I’ve ever met. I love you so much, to the moon and ‘bake’ 10,000 times.”

And, scene.
I love you, too Lila.

They colored the Lord’s Prayer this week, too.
Vivi included a little note on hers:

“Dear Mommy and Daddy,
You have always been there for me.
Vivi.”
Truth? We have no choice. We’re obligated.
Speaking of obligated, this week Vivi told Craig and I that we, as her parents, were obligated to tuck her in every night.
I think she’s right.
It’s notes like this… conversations like this… that keep you going.
They almost make you forget that the loser of rock, paper scissors has to go with you to Costco.

Post Script:
I start many drafts of “What they Say” but I don’t always post them.
Here’s one from November 2018 that I never posted but want to remember:
I made chili for dinner the other night. We’re all sitting down eating…
I ask the girls, “Is it good?
Vivienne, age 7, responds with: “Mas or Menos.”
Translation: “More or less.”
Humpf.
Apparently my cooking is mediocre, more or less.
I mean, you can’t do it all.
